I recently had an opportunity to inspect Zhongshan’s Cuiheng New District as well as the building site for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan bridge. Zhongshan is situated in southern China’s Pearl River Delta and a short 60 kilometres from Hong Kong. The city has struggled to compete with commercial giants in Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Foshan. But there is hope.
3 key points:
1) Cuiheng New District will effectively relocate Zhongshan’s commercial activities to the western bank of the Pearl River Delta, a short 20-minute ferry ride to Shenzhen and 40-minute ride to Hong Kong. That’s a huge connectivity boost.
2) The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge will be an even bigger game changer. By linking Cuiheng to Shenzhen, especially the Qianhai SEZ, I expect growing numbers of workers to live in Zhongshan but commute to their jobs in Shenzhen.
3) The challenge is whether Zhongshan can capture advanced manufacturing given that Shenzhen’s factories are more likely to take up space in southern Dongguan where more low-end factories have recently shut down.
