Yoshiyuki Oba


Oba plays a senior role in our strategy consulting work with a focus on mid-market clients in Southeast Asia, as well as supporting our executive programs for Japanese executives.

Oba has 25 years of experience in multinational SME banking, investment and financial & strategy advisory as a trusted backer for midsized enterprises in Japan and Southeast Asia. He is the former Founder & Managing Director at Crossborder Japan Co., Ltd., based in Tokyo and Singapore, where he assisted Japanese mid-market clients and regional banks in developing global strategies and implementing them in the ASEAN region.

Oba was also previously Chief Consultant at Mitsubishi UFJ Research & Consulting Co., Ltd. (MURC), Tokyo, a Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ-owned research firm based in Tokyo. Prior to this, he spent over a decade both at Japan Finance Corporation (JFC) and Tokyo Small and Medium Business Investment & Consultation Co., Ltd. (SBIC) as part of the agency’s overseas business office.

Since 2001, Oba has conducted international assistance projects sponsored by such agencies as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and World Bank. He has provided SME policy advisory to governments and central banks, as well as SME-focused strategy consulting for a range of private and public-sector groups in the ASEAN region.

Oba is a Japanese-national and long-term resident of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. He is a visiting research fellow at both Waseda University’s Vietnam Research Institute (Tokyo) and Japan Economic Research Institute (Tokyo).
